Equipment
We operate and maintain a range of equipment suitable for in-situ experiments on beamlines or for off-line experiments complementing X-ray or neutron experiments. The equipment is available for loan to researchers of the Harwell National Facilities.
In addition to already available equipment, we provide our expertise in designing, manufacturing, and operating custom-made rigs and sample environment cells to fit your requirements. Our specialty is developing rigs and sample environments for extreme environments.

Instron Electro-mechanical tester ETMT
- Up to 3 kN
- Up to 1500 °C (specimen dependent) using resistance heating
- Operation in air, inert atmosphere, or vacuum
- Suitable for X-ray imaging, limited suitability for X-ray tomography (limited angle tomography only)
- Suitable for X-ray diffraction
- Currently available at Diamond I12 beamline.
The use of the ETMT is free of charge for academic users performing offline and beamtime experiments at I12. The use of this equipment must be agreed with UoMaH (UoMaHarwell@manchester.ac.uk) in advance of submitting a proposal.
Proposals are required to include a UoMaH staff member as co-investigator (after proposal acceptance at the latest).
If the ETMT is used in an experiment that results in a publication, the publication will reference The University of Manchester / Diamond collaboration in the following manner: "This experiment was possible due to the contribution of The University of Manchester at Harwell (UoMaH) ETMT".
